One of the most common questions we get asked here at WATSSUP HQ is ‘What is the best time to paddle at Watsons Bay?’ and the answer is ‘the earlier the better!

Weather & water conditions at Watsons Bay tend to be best between 7.00am and 12.00pm making it the prime time to paddle. Discover: calm glassy water, little to no wind and if you come early enough the sun reflecting off the city skyline over the harbour is simply magical, creating the most beautiful backdrop for your SUP experience! Often we get lucky and find these perfect paddling conditions continue throughout the day. However if ‘Huey the weather God’ (the guy in the sky who controls the weather for all ocean sports enthusiasts) decides he wants to blow us off the water, this is likely to happen in the arvo. So enjoy a beautiful paddle in the AM to avoid Huey’s wrath which could make your paddle more of a battle of man vs wind.

Watsons Bay is one of the most popular places to visit in Sydney due to its gorgeous selection of swimming beaches, beautiful coastal walks and vibrant choice of places to eat and drink. Being such a go-to destination, if you are thinking of driving, arrive before the midday hustle and bustle to ensure a stress free start to your SUP session. Alternatively, why not enjoy a lovely morning ferry ride boasting fabulous views of Harbour Bridge and the Opera House before jumping off at Watsons Bay wharf, just a 2 minute walk away from our WATSSUP van. A non driving option also means you can enjoy some afternoon post-paddle bevvys and extend your visit to experience the famous Sydney sunset over the Harbour.

With over 50 ferries entering and dropping off thousands of visitors each day, not to mention the water taxis and private boats, the water can get pretty busy too especially over the lunch time rush! This commotion of boat traffic can cause quite a lot of disruption to the water. So for a much calmer & tranquil paddle where you aren’t competing for your place in the bay, come and enjoy your paddle in the morning.

Lastly, temperatures can get pretty hot in Watto Bay as the sun begins to bake us from around 11.00am, especially in the summer months! Avoid an afternoon sizzle and keep your cool by opting for an earlier paddle. You then have the rest of the day to experience everything else Watsons Bay has to offer and even cool off in one of the local swimming spots.

So if you are thinking of joining us for a paddle then get the prime spot and book in for a morning session where available. There is no better way to start the day than spending time amongst saltwater, getting active and having some fun outdoors. It will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated and you’ll have the whole day ahead of you to enjoy your re energised self and explore what else Watsons Bay has to offer.
